i need help with WMP/DirectShow, sorry if this is the wrong place to post but im lost :(

hello everyone

thanks for taking time to read my post. i have recently been encountering problems using WMP and some error messages about DirectShow. i have tried many solutions but none seem to work. firstly i shall post my system specs:

OS: Windows XP Professional Build 2600 SP2 fully updated.

Hardware:

AMD Athlon 64 bit 2800+ @ 2x 900 mHz

motherboard Gigabyte K8NS with nForce3 chipset with AC97 audio

ATI Radeon 9500 XT 128 MB

generic 5.1 soundcard (alternative would be the on-broad AC97)

Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 80GB SATA Harddisk

CD/DVD Rom/floppy

my problem is :

it started off by a re-installation of my video driver. i re-installed it and everything was fine. however when i then tried to run DxDiag.exe it showed me this error message:

The programm has detected that there were problem accessing DirectShow. The cause might be a previous improper use of the program. Do u want to skip DirectShow?

click yes and DxDiag will run fine. click no and it will close itself.

and then

when i tried to play something on WMP10

it just wont play, it says that i dont have the codec installed. i cannot play .wmv .wma .mp3 .avi and some other files. i can play .avi files but it will not contain any sound. i went to the microsoft troubleshooting page and it says that i am missing the "1 - Codec" and there isnt any available download.

however i can play avi on Real Player, for some unkwon reason.

i tried uninstalling WMP10 (via the add/remove tool)

it returned the version of the WMP to 9, however WMP9 will as well play nothing. and it will play avi without sound. i re-installed WMP10 and the problem still exist.

i dont know if this has anything to do with DirectShow/WMP but seems very much that it does.

i wish this is the right place to seek some help as i have been trying to figure out whats going wrong for the past week and still no luck.

much thanks in advance for any help provided.

cheers.
