How to connect to lists and libraries in another Site Collection

MOSS documentation states explicitly that I cannot do what I want to do, namely, create a data source connection to lists and document libraries in another Sharepoint site collection:

"If the other site is in the same site collection, you can access all of the data sources in that site, including SharePoint lists and libraries. If the other site is in a different site collection, you can still access all of the other data sources, but not SharePoint lists and libraries."
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointdesigner/HA101191181033.aspx

However, I'm in the process of setting up a corporate deployment following the model described under "Design Logical Architecture" in Microsoft's Technet book "Planning and Architecture for Office SharePoint Server 2007."
http://technet2.microsoft.com/Office/en-us/library/3e3b8737-c6a3-4e2c-a35f-f0095d952b781033.mspx?mfr=true

And that model includes multiple site collections containing data that seems to need to be accessed by other site collections, so I'm thinking that there must be SOME way to access lists and documents on one site collection from another site collection.

Can anyone tell me if there is a work-around way to do so? Or whether it might it be possible to do so using a business data catalog?

Thanks.

I don't recomment using connect to another library from a different site collection.

You can use the XML Web Services technique or the XML Files technique there are lots of references on how to get list information as XML.

And the Sharepoint Web services might provide the needed data as well.

I don't understand why Microsoft won't allow you to see the lists and libraries from a different site collection. I think that is overly restrictive.

The other option is to use a list rollup part from a 3rd party source
