Can't post to forum when ZoneAlarm is running

I can post only when ZoneAlarm is turned off.

But I have no problem posting the other 99.9% of the internet.

Please fix the problem.

Hmm, ZoneAlarm is stopping you posting and it's the forums fault...

You should fix it yourself.
Webmasters of this forum are not able to help you.

So is this a MS forum bug, maybe, but if your software does not work for clients then you do need to be aware of it, and either support or advise them of the issues, otherwise you still look bad.

So I use ZA, and I cannot post. Why is that? First guess Passport. It often gets stuffed, but for once it doesn't appear to be that. What next, no idea. When I do think of ZA, and I search for it in these forums it doesn't even turn up this thread! So I'd rather MS fixed the ZA issue, or perhaps had a FAQ entry about it since the search doesn't work very well.

Thanks for reporting both of these issues, and sorry it took so long to get back to you on these. Search is something that we are constantly trying to improve. Remember that everyone can help with search by making sure that you rate helpful posts as such, mark posts as answers if they answered your original question, and use very clear keywords in your subject line.

As for Zone Alarm, we do not currently have any other feedback from people that are having trouble using the forums due to a firewall. I would suggest carefully looking through your Zone Alarm settings. Another option is to add the domain "Microsoft.com" to your safe domains.

Joe,

Why do we have to elevate our trust for MS when we do not for other forums? Rhetorical question, but your use of passport is the main reason, cross domains etc.

As for Search, I'm sorry but it is it is pathetic. As a logged on user performing an advanced search it is limited to *my* posts only unless I supply "Users". So I cannot do advanced searches unless I know the user who posted the response. It strikes me that if I knew the user I would probably be able to have found the post without a search. If you haven't posted much you just think the search is so %^&*($£ as to not return any results. I only noticed after I had posted for a while and saw *only* my results come up in the advanced search.

Google has great feature to limit a search by site. That is what I suggest people use for these forums.

Google Groups is vey good....

It is most likely you don't have to elevate your trust for these forums, but without actually seeing the computer's Zone Alarm settings, it's hard to say exactly what is keeping you from posting with the program on. My suggestion was simply a workaround, although I'd really encourage you to see if there is a particular setting in the firewall that is causing this issue. Like I said though, without seeing the computer, I'm afraid I can't be more help.

As for search, you're right. It is definitely an area that needs improvement, and we are constantly striving to improve the system. I really do appreciate your feedback--it's important to us that we get these forums right. One problem with the advanced search features is that they are difficult for many users to use, and we are working on improving that.

I hope to keep seeing you on these forums, and if you have any more feedback, just post it in this forum--I read it every workday and file bugs and suggestion improvements with the forums team directly from it. You never know--you might just suggest our new best feature!

Thanks,

You say you have had no responses from anyone experiencing trouble posting when running Zone Alarm. I have been struggling all day trying to reply to people who have responded to my posts and found that my posts just did not go through or appear in my list of threads. After seeing this post I switched off Zone Alarm and switched on Windows firewall instead, now I can post!!!!

This is a pain as Zone Labs run the most pathetic help pages I have ever come across. You could write to them and tell them your hair turned purple after installing their product and you would get the same stock email telling you to uninstall and reinstall....

I have been tinkering with my Zone alarm settings and now seem to have some success posting, not %100 sure as this has been an intermittent problem. The settings changed where: -

Firewall - added forums.microsoft.com to the trusted sites.

Privacy - All off

ID Protection - added forums.microsoft.com

Internet Zone security - set to high from medium ?

What seemed to finally make the difference was turning on the privacy adviser. This as to see if it popped up to advise me it had blocked something but it doesn't. However after changing this I seem to be able to post at will.

Hope this helps
