MSDN Forums What’s Update (4/23/05)
A lot has happened since I posted
the first update and welcome post. The MSDN Forums Beta has since seen its3000th registerd userand3000th thread. The answer rate is still hovering around the 90% mark at 88% as of this morning! Several new forums are now live including new VB and VSTS forums. My personal highlight has been watching the contribution level from a few community standouts that I’ll call out here.Community Contributors Making a Difference
I’m sure I’ll miss someone here since we don’t have an automated way to call out top answerers yet, but I’ve been trolling the forums regularly from work, while on the exercise bike, and even from my smart phone via the alerts system! So, although completely unscientific, I’d like to say thanks to the following members:
David M. Kean is going to pass me soon as a top poster. He’s been replying all over the place and also helping us keep the Bugs & Problems forum clean by redirecting the people who don’t see the announcement.Jochen Kalmbach is an MVP who is one of the top users from the NNTP interface as well as the web side. If his NNTP posts counted towards his web profile he might just be the top overall poster. Jochen has been primarily answering questions in theVC++ forum.casperOne (aka Nicholas) is a .NET/C# MVP who has been answering questions in the VB, C#, and .NET general world. His 68 posts, so far, rank him #3 overall behind only David from the community.Oren,Vikram, andPaul have also been very active repliers over the last two weeks and deserve to be called out.Chris Menagay andDaveBost have the honor of being the first community members given moderator privileges. They were nominated by the VSTS Microsoft forum hostsAjay andRob.Thanks to you all and thanks to all of the first 3k members for helping us get this site off the ground!
Forum Tips of the Week
Using the "Report" button to alert Moderators of Issues
In the bottom right of every post is a "Report" link that can be used to alert forum moderators of posts that may require moderation because they are duplicates, off-topic, offensive, etc.
You may have noticed that, at the moment, new posts are not required to go through moderation before appearing so there is a chance that some issues may slip through the watchful eyes of the forum moderators.
Remind People to "Mark as Correct Answer"
You may have noticed my signature. If you are answering questions feel free to remind the asker to give you credit by marking the best replies as answers. We will eventually be generating "top answerer" lists that will be based on this tagging and the asker has the ultimate say in what replies are considered answers.
The answer rate is something we’ll be keeping a very close watch on for each forum and the site as a whole. Marking answers is also a process that we’ll be looking to improve over time by providing more incentives for the "askers" to give credit to the best replies and potentially expanding the set of people that can mark replies as answers.
Questions of the Week
There seems to be some issues with editing posts and disappearing content?
The forums team is aware of this issue and will be looking into it. I can personally attest that this issue is real and that it is especially frustrating for the moderation staff. We’ll let you know when we believe it has been fixed.
In the meantime, if you can consistently reproduce this behavior please
respond to one of the existing threads and add your repro steps as well as any additional information about your browser settings that may help the forums team track this bug down. Are the Winforms Forums here to stay this time? What about the winforms
Yes. They may, however, disappear for a day or two in the next few weeks as we work on content migration from the
windowsforms.net site forums. We intend to only keep one set of Windows Forms Forums (say that ten times fast) as a company and that set will live on this site.In Closing
Thanks for reading this far. If someone answers your question don’t forget to say thanks and give them credit by marking their reply as an answer. I’ll be posting more thoughts on the forums here and
on my blog over the next few weeks. If you have any feedback on the MSDN Forums Beta please continue to leverage the
site feedback forums. We’re listening.Thanks,
josh ledgard
